YOUR SURVIVAL DEPENDS ON YOU
By participating in the Friends of the Davis Library’s Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive, you’re expected to take full responsibility for your own actions. If you choose to disregard our event rules and/or break the law, you will have to accept the potential penalties for your “monstrous” conduct.
The Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive—its organizers (Friends of the Davis Library), its sponsors (including the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College and Bob Evans Farms, Inc.), its volunteers, and all others associated with the event’s operations—are not liable for your actions.
You’re joining the “Walking Dead,” not the “Walking Dumb” so please use good common sense and understand that you’re accountable for your own behavior. Just because you may look like an “evil flesh-eating creature,” doesn’t mean you have to act like one.

Please Note: Parents or guardians of “midget zombies” participating in the Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive also assume the responsibility for the behavior and actions of their children and/or pets (dogs only and on leash.) Please supervise your kids and/or pets throughout the walk and make sure they’re aware of both our event rules and those of society.
Also, keep in mind that many of our event participants will be in makeup/costumes that could possibly freak-out pets or young children, so again, use your best judgement. We don’t want to ban young children (strollers) or dogs from the event, but we don’t want any “disastrous outbreaks” either. If walking with a pet, be prepared to “scoop the poop” and dispose of it properly. If your child requires a diaper change along the way, then pitch that “call of dootie” and/or any other trash into the wastebaskets that will been made available at various sites throughout the 5K course route. Then, if you have a medical condition of any kind, please know and respect your limits. As with any exercise or fitness program, you should check with your doctor before participating in any 5K walk or run event. By performing such physical activity, you’re doing so at your own risk. The Friends of the Davis Library’s Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive will not be responsible for any harm or injury as a result of the event’s hike through campus and Bob Evans Farms’ property. Volunteers will be located throughout the course route so don’t hesitate to seek their assistance if you find yourself in need of first aid treatment or emergency care. (See FINDING SANCTUARY & SAFETY ZONES below for rest stop information.) |
Once again, the point of this event is for everyone to support a good cause and enjoy some good family-friendly fun. Don’t lose your moral compass and “braaaiiinnns” just because the “zombie apocalypse” has seemingly arrived.
(See all of our event rules as well as our Walker Registration Form for a complete discussion of safety and liability issues related to this event.)

GETTING YOUR ZOMBIE ON!
All participants are strongly encouraged to wear costumes and/or makeup, but we won’t force any you to get “creepy” if dressing up isn’t your thing. A special “Zombification Station” will be on hand for anyone wanting to try out the latest in “undead” makeup or fashion.
With costumes, please make sure that they’re appropriate for the general public. Do not wear any accessories that could be harmful to yourself or others, such as sharp edges, splaying blood, rabid dogs, shooting weapons, and explosives. They are so out of season and an embarrassing trend from yesteryears. (See NO ZOMBIE HUNTING!!! rules below.)
The Rio Grande Bookstore will have custom T-shirts with the Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive event logo available for purchase if you’re wanting to be the envy of anyone and everyone when it comes to “classic horror” chic.
Now remember… since this event, for the most part, involves completing a 5K (3.10686 miles) outdoor multi-terrain course route by foot, we do recommend that you take that fact into full consideration when planning what to wear. Comfortable weather appropriate clothing and supportive walking shoes are a must!
Look on the Davis Library’s Facebook Page for a variety of tips on how to prepare for our Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive in the weeks and days prior to the event.

NO ZOMBIE HUNTING ALLOWED!!!
Firearms and other forms of deadly weaponry, whether fake or real, will not be tolerated at the Friends of the Davis Library’s Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive.
The University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College has strict regulations with regard to weapons possession on campus:
The University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College has strict regulations with regard to weapons possession on campus:
Any possession or use of explosives, firearms, fireworks, or a weapon in University or Community College facilities, on University or Community College property, or in private vehicles is strictly prohibited by the campus community. Pursuant to the Concealed Weapons Law, Ohio Revised Code, Section 2923.126(B) (5), University policy prevails. NOTE: Pellet, BB guns, and Paint guns are considered weapons as addressed in this section. Individuals are encouraged to contact the Campus Police Department for further clarification or storage of weapons and ammunition while on campus. (p. 41)
“But if they’re just pretend weapons… what’s the big deal?”
Please our lives (particularly those of local and campus police officers) have enough stress in them as is, so give us all a break and leave the “zombie blasters” at home. We really don’t want to have to ruin everyone’s evening fun by worrying about and checking up on folks throughout the night to make sure that their gun, knife, axe or chainsaw is really a toy or not.
Besides the point of this event is to “Be the Zombie!” It’s your turn to become a “walker.” You’re a strong and fearless “reanimated corpse” type-of-thing, so you don’t need no stinking weapons when out and about stalking the countryside.

DON'T EAT YOUR FRIENDS... OR, ENEMIES!
Once again, the idea here is to have fun and not go on a “crazy diseased zombie rampage.” With their rise of popularity, zombies have become highly regarded and respected for a variety of reasons. Return that respect by being mindful of others.
Yes, we know there are philosophical debates on the “consciousness of zombies,” but for this event we’re acting under the assumption that “walkers” participating in the Friends of the Davis Library’s Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive do in fact have a great sense and understanding of the need to care for the well-being of others. If not, they wouldn’t be taking part in an event aimed at creating awareness of hunger and poverty issues “plaguing” both individuals and families in the Ohio Appalachian region.
With that statement, please be aware that not everyone always appreciates or finds it funny to be shocked or scared. Do not terrorize innocent bystanders—particularly those individuals who have not chosen to participate in Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive and may be on campus or Bob Evans’ Farms’ property for other reasons.
Do not attack, dismember, maul, chomp, gnaw, nibble anyone watching or participating in the walk without their permission. Even if permission is granted, such behavior is generally not socially acceptable, so be a good “monster” and keep your “rotting hands and flesh” to yourself.
As far as spectators are concerned, we want to remind you that this is not a “Humans vs. Zombies” event. So, please do not taunt or threaten “walkers.” Then, absolutely under no circumstances, should anyone be aiming or shooting anything other than a camera at this event. (See our NO ZOMBIE HUNTING!!! rules above for more details.)
With the Friends of the Davis Library’s Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive, zombies are our friends. They will not be eating our friends. Instead, they are here to help us feed our friends. So once again, everyone is expected to behave in a safe and legal manner. Acts of violence or harm to others or their property will have serious consequences.
(Please review all of our event rules as well as our Walker Registration Form for complete details on our efforts to make the Friends of the Davis Library’s Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive as safe, fun, and healthy experience as possible for everyone.)

STAY ON PATH TO PREVENT BONE-CRUNCHING INCIDENTS
Stay on the sidewalks and to your right on all roads and pathways throughout the Friends of the Davis Library’s Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive course route. Cones and markers will be present to help direct our “zombie parade,” so for your safety please remain in the “terminus” or bounds of the trail.
Once again, our 5K course route is multi-terrain. Consequently, you’ll be going back-and-forth from concrete to blacktop to gravel to dirt to grass during the walk. Sticking to the designated path should help prevent accidents.
Please be aware that some of our 5K course route trails overlap and it’s possible that “walkers” will be coming and going at the same time on the same pathway. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of keeping an eye on where you’re going and doing your best to avoid smashing into other “walkers.”
Since the event will be taking place near dusk, you may also want to consider carrying a flashlight with you and/or wearing light-colored reflective clothing as an extra precaution. While we do plan to have our 5K course route well-marked, well-lit, and well-staffed with plenty of volunteers to ensure everyone’s safety, it never hurts to have such “post-apocalyptic survival kit” items on hand for that added security.
The details of our 5K course route are outlined below:

The details of our 5K course route are outlined below:
(Click here to download and print our 5K course route map.)
- To start the 5K course route, “walkers” will use the sidewalk in front of the Outside Basketball Court to head south toward Wood Hall.
- “Walkers” should turn left onto the sidewalk on the left-hand-side of the road that runs along Ridge Avenue. “Walkers” will now be headed east in the direction of Lyne Center.
- At the intersection of East College Avenue and Ridge Avenue, “walkers” should cross East College Avenue and move onto the sidewalk just outside Lyne Center. “Walkers” should then turn left and head north down the hill toward Bevo Francis Way.
- At Bevo Francis Way, "walkers" will need to take a right and head west, continuing along the road pas the Stanley L. Evans Athletic & Recreational Field.
Please note: Bevo Francis Way will be closed to almost all traffic that evening for this event. However, it's possible that a few cars or other vehicles may be coming in and out of the parking lots near Bob Evans Farms Hall and the Area Agency on Aging.
Event volunteers and rest stops will be situated along the route to help ensure safety and direct traffic, if necessary. Rio Grande's Campus Police will also be on hand to help escort "zombie hordes" along parts of the route as well.
Event volunteers and rest stops will be situated along the route to help ensure safety and direct traffic, if necessary. Rio Grande's Campus Police will also be on hand to help escort "zombie hordes" along parts of the route as well.
- The 5K course route will carry on up Bevo Francis Way toward the entry gates for the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College. Before reaching those gates, “walkers” should turn east/right onto the short gravel road that offers access to Bob Evans Farms’ property.
- “Walkers” should continue heading east on that gravel road until they come to a fork in the road where the eastbound part of the gravel road becomes a grass and gravel path that extends toward the Bob Evans Farms’ Windmill. “Walkers” should take the grass and gravel path leading to the Windmill.
- As “walkers” get closer to the Windmill they will arrive at another gravel road. Here, they should turn right onto the gravel road and head south.
- “Walkers” will follow this gravel road as it circles around the field where the “Radio Flyers Fly-In” is regularly held. Eventually, “walkers” should find themselves traveling west on this same gravel road after a slight bend.
- As “walkers” continue westward, they should arrive at another gravel road. This time, they should head south by making a left-turn. This path will lead “walkers” to Bob Evans Farms’ Shelter House.
- “Walkers” should continue south on this gravel road until they reach the Shelter House, which is one of the rest stops on our 5K course route.
- At the Shelter House, “walkers” will then turn around and head back using the same gravel road that brought them to the Shelter House.
- “Walkers” should now be headed north. This time, they should go straight instead of turning onto the other gravel road they took before. Continuing north, "walkers" will eventually reach the fork in the road that they passed earlier near the short gravel road that provided access to Bob Evans Farms' property from Bevo Francis Way.
- At the for in the road, "walkers" should now turn left/west and head back toward Bevo Francis Way and the entrance gates for the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College. (Once again, please be considerate of other "walkers" who might be traveling in the opposite direction as this is one of the areas where the course pathways overlap.)
- Next, "walkers" should turn left at Bevo Francis Way and head back toward campus. (Remember, use care and stay to the right so that "zombie pileups" may be avoided.)
- When "walkers" get back to the corner of Bevo Francis Way and East College Avenue, they should now turn right and head north up the gravel path that runs along East College Avenue on the right-hand-side of the street.
- As "walkers" get closer to Holzer Hall and Dormitory Alley , which is located just a short distance up and across the road, they should prepare to cross East College Avenue and turn left/west onto Dormitory Alley.
- "Walkers" will then take Dormitory Alley north until they reach the sidewalk that leads back to the Outdoor Basketball Court, where our 5K course route began and now ends with the finish line right next to the gazebo.
Once again, the 5K course route will be clearly marked for this event and rest stop areas will be provided at various points along the way. Since it includes concrete sidewalks, blacktopped streets and parking lots, gravel roads, and grass and dirt paths, we ask that you please be sure to consider the landscape and length of the route when determining your costume and/or with whom or what you will travel.
While we are not going to ban leashed pets or young children in strollers from our event as is often the case with other 5K races that are timed, we do ask that you please make sure they’re able to handle the route safely.
Since this event is a fun-walk, you’re welcome to complete only part of the route if you feel that entire course is too much for you. Don’t forget! Zombies always wear practical, comfortable, and supportive walking shoes!
(See our FINDING SANCTUARY & SAFETY ZONES section below for more details on our rest stops. Then, visit the Davis Library’s Facebook Page in the weeks and days prior to the event for a variety of tips on how to prepare for our Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive)

FINDING SANCTUARY & SAFETY ZONES
Have that feeling your legs are about to fall off? Is your hunger or thirst getting the most of you? Think you need to be “quarantined” for a bit? Or, more simply, do you just have relieve yourself?
Rest stops or “Sanctuary & Safety Zones” will be located throughout the 5K course route. Volunteers at these sites will be available to assist you. They may give directions to the nearest restroom, supply a Band-Aid, or contact help in cases of emergency.
Most course route’s rest stops will offer free bottles of water to “walkers” as a quick refreshment. However, it’s possible that some of the sites may provide something to nosh on too, but don’t count on it as eating and exercising generally don’t mix.
Feeding opportunities will, however, be available after the fun-walk at our “Post-Apocalypse Party.” Meals and snacks may also be purchased on campus at the University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College’s Bookstore's Grande Central and Sodexo's Marketplace Dining Services. Bob Evans Farms Restaurant and several other eateries are located within the Village of Rio Grande, if you’re wanting to pick up bite to eat before or after the event.

THIS ISN'T MINECRAFT... ZOMBIES REALLY DON'T LIKE RAIN
As long as rain is light and doesn’t jeopardize the condition of course route, then the Friends of the Davis Library’s Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive will go ahead as scheduled.
Heavy rain or muddy/flooded pathways, on the other hand, will require us to cancel the walk. However, we may still continue with the “Post-Apocalypse Party” by moving it inside.
Sorry, no full or partial refunds will be given if the Friends of the Davis Library’s Zombie-Thon 5K Walk & Charity Food Drive is cancelled. No rain date will be offered either.
Your entry fee and nonperishable food donations will still help support the Rio Helping Hands Food Pantry needs and the Friends of the Davis Library’s programming and outreach efforts to bring “new life” to Davis Library. We cannot thank you enough for your contributions and help in backing such worthwhile causes.
Please visit the Davis Library’s Facebook Page regularly to keep informed about any last minute announcements or changes related to the event and its activities.
